October meeting report

Reports:

• The secretary, Jim Brown, sent his report stating that we currently have 66 members who have paid dues in 2009. An additional 18 members last paid dues in 2008 but are still on the E-Mail list.

• Club dues are due by the end of the year. Additionally, this is also the time to renew your AAW membership. AAW membership is $48 this year but along with this increase is the addition of two more issues of American Woodturner.

Announcements:

• Elwood Borger, Lee Buck, Dave Gibson, Brad Sears and Wilhellm Schmidt were thanked of their participation in the Parkland Library exhibit. Our display was well received and it is likely we will be invited back in the future.

• Roy Aber, Neil Brown, Lee Buck and Mike Kehs received thanks for helping Woodcraft conduct their Baseball Bat turning day.

• On Friday, November 6th and Saturday, November 7th Woodcraft will be conducting a “Turn Pens for Our Troops.” Volunteers are needed for both days. Some individuals signed up as volunteers but more would really help. In addition, if any members wish to turn some pens before the official dates, they may pick up wood and kits at Woodcraft. This assumes you have a pen mandrel and a means to assemble a pen.

• The next president’s challenge is to turn something that starts with the letter “T.” Some suggestions are tops, tree, toys, tiny, tallest, thin, threaded… Use you imagination and have fun! These objects will be displayed at the January 2010 meeting.

• While not mentioned at the meeting (I forgot!) we will have our annual Christmas gift exchange at the December meeting. Give a gift and get a gift. The item should fit in a 6” x 6” x 6” container. This is a fun event and you will probably get to take home something to treasure.

Bill Smith Rose Engine

This months demonstration was presented to us by Bill Smith a current member of LVW.
He is here to show us his Rose Engine lathe. Bill has purchased the kit and built it himself.
(right) here are some design creations Bill has made.
Bill has also written a good book on segmented turnings. Its in the library.

First Bill starts out with a bevel cut router bit. As he turns the machine by hand,
the head stock rocks back and forth on the white cam. The rocking is what’s bringing
the wood closer to the cutting bit.

The wood is turned 360 deg for each pass. After the pass Bill changes the X and Y axis to next desired cut.

This is what the piece looks like with overlapping passes.
(right) Bill has jumped ahead and turned the top and bottom to make a box.
He tapes the pieces together and starts to decorate the bottom.
Here he is using a different cutting head from before.

Next he is decorating the bottom of the lid.

Bill is changing the cam to create a different pattern for the top of the box.

He recommends very light cuts towards the end to keep those lines nice and crisp.
Bill has created something very unique.

Thank you for your time to show us the Rose Engine.

Check out youtube  to see the Rose Engine in action.
